ABOUT | HISTORY

Founded in 1990 the David Powell Health Center has provided HIV care and treatment to Central Texans living with HIV since the beginning of the HIV epidemic. As medical advancements have progressed in the fight against HIV through the years, so has our center.  David Powell Health Center is part of CommUnityCare, a nonprofit health system of 27 health centers, primarily located in Austin and Travis County. HIV treatment can also be accessed at CommUnityCare’s North Central and Care Connections Health Centers.

WHAT WE DO AND WHY WE DO IT

Our center of excellence includes practitioners who are informed by 30 years of practicing HIV medicine in the greater Austin area. We are committed to helping patients with an HIV diagnosis live fulfilling, healthy lives through comprehensive prevention and treatment options. Our team-based care approach includes physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, therapists, social workers, and dietitians. We are dedicated to treating you and not just your diagnosis.

WHO IS DAVID POWELL?

David Michael Powell [1956-1989], originally from Norman, Oklahoma came to Austin, Texas where he was working on pursuing his Ph.D. in social work administration from the University of Texas. He worked as the HIV Services Program Manager at the Austin Travis County Health Department. It was part of his vision to provide HIV medical services to people recently diagnosed as HIV positive. Powell died of an AIDS-related illness at the young age of 33 in Austin. His work led to a grant that secured funding for the David Powell Health Center which opened one year after his death.

HIV IN CENTRAL TEXAS

1 out of 7 people living with HIV are unaware of their status.  HIV testing is easily accessible at the David Powell Health Center. Routine HIV screening is part of all new patient appointments with additional screening available upon request.

Thanks to medical advancements it is possible to live a long and healthy life with an HIV diagnosis with proper management, but there is still a lot of work to be done. In Texas, HIV disproportionately impacts young adults under the age of 35, men who have sex with men, transgender women who have sex with men, and racial and ethnic minorities. We are dedicated to serving those populations most at risk regardless of your ability to pay.
